Amid the COVID-19 pandemic, a lot of people are wearing gloves. But a viral Facebook video from a nurse in Michigan shows how gloves are only effective at preventing the spread of germs when used properly.

“I had gone grocery shopping that morning and seen many people improperly using their gloves. When I got home I was doing some painting around the house and it hit me that paint would be a perfect medium to use to explain this,” Lixey told Yahoo Lifestyle. “I understand as a nurse, I have had extensive training in the use of PPE, but many people in the general public have not.”

In a video that has more than 1.3 million views, Lixey uses green paint to demonstrate how easily someone wearing gloves can still be exposed to dangerous germs like the coronavirus by failing to follow other safety measures like washing your hands frequently, not touching your face and properly disposing of gloves.

According to Lixey, if you’re not washing your hands frequently, there’s “no point” to wearing gloves.

“A lot of people assume gloves and masks are magic bubbles, and it’s just not true. People need to be aware of what they are doing not only to protect themselves but also to protect others,” she told Yahoo Lifestyle. “I think it’s just a lack of awareness. If you’ve never been trained in the proper use of PPE, you won’t know how to use it appropriately.”
