CNN reporter OmarJimenez and his team were arrested Friday morning as they reported on the recent round of protests in Minneapolis, which were sparked over the death of George Floyd, a handcuffed black man who had pleaded for air as a white police officer kneeled on his neck.

  • Jimenez asked police where they wanted him to be in the protest area. The police arrested him.
  • Jimenez, producer Bill Kirkos, photojournalist Leonel Mendez were later released from custody.

The response:

  • CNN response: “A clear violation of their First Amendment rights.”
  • Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz apologized for the arrest: “It was totally unacceptable.”
  • Minnesota State Patrol: “In the course of clearing the streets and restoring order at Lake Street and Snelling Avenue, four people were arrested by State Patrol troopers, including three members of a CNN crew. The three were released once they were confirmed to be members of the media.”
  • CNN (in response to the state patrol): “This is not accurate - our CNN crew identified themselves, on live television, immediately as journalists. We thank Minnesota @GovTimWalz for his swift action this morning to aid in the release of our crew.”
  • CNN anchor John Berman: “That is an American television reporter Omar Jimenez being led away by police officers. He clearly identified himself as a reporter. He was respectfully explaining to the state police that our CNN team was there and was moving away as they would request,” explained “New Day” anchor John Berman. “And for some reason, he was just taken into police custody live on television.”
  • MSNBC: “We condemn the arrest and detention of a crew of @CNN journalists who were simply doing their jobs in a tough situation on the ground in Minneapolis. This is a time when the work of journalists continues to be necessary to inform and educate the public.”
  • Fox News (emailed to the Deseret News): “FOX News Channel has always supported the First Amendment and this instance is no different. We denounce the detainment of the CNN crew and stand with them in protecting the right to report without fear or favor.”
