Public health officials have called on Americans to embrace masks during the coronavirus pandemic, noting that the mask can stop transmission of the virus.

What’s going on:

  • Masks have become the latest tool to protect people against the coronavirus.
  • Masks can stop droplets of the virus from transferring from one person to another.
  • “I encourage Utahns to wear masks to help protect neighbors, friends, families and communities. Wearing a mask is a simple act to protect vulnerable populations and livelihoods. If wearing a mask means we can continue to lighten other restrictions we’re living under, economic and otherwise, and it means our kids can go back to school this fall, I’m happy to wear a mask,” said state Sen. Dan Hemmert, co-chairman of the commission, in a statement, per the Deseret News.

There are four things to consider when you wear a mask, according to experts who spoke with Fox News:

  • It can be harder to breathe in more humid climates. But the mask won’t necessarily decrease oxygen to your body.
  • Masks don’t cause fungal or bacterial infections.
  • Disposable masks should be used once and tossed. Cloth masks should be washed often.
  • Don’t touch your face when you wear a mask. You don’t want the germs on the mask to transfer to your face.
