Researchers from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission have captured a new Suwannee alligator snapping turtle — which is essentially a dinosaur. You know this.

  • The researchers said they were checking out some traps and they found the turtles, known as Macrochelys suwanniensis.
  • They found three types — a 100-pound male, a 46-pound female, and a 64-pound male
  • The FWC found the species back in 2014.

More about the creature:

  • The reptile has been called the “dinosaur of the turtle world,” according to National Geographic.
  • Alligator snapping turtles — which are apparently a thing — are the largest freshwater turtles in the country. They have a spiked shell and heavy jaw. They can live to 100 years old, per Fox News.
  • The only predators for these turtles are humans. Recently, their population has dropped because of habitat loss, according to Fox News.
