PepsiCo has decided to launch a new drink — called Driftwell — that is meant to help people relax and fall asleep before bed, CNBC reports.
- The drink is an “enhanced water drink” with 200 milligrams of L-theanine, which is about 10% of the daily value of magnesium.
What’s going on?
Pepsi employees created the idea for a new drink that could help people relax amid the coronavirus pandemic. The idea was created as a part of an internal competition for new ideas.
Emily Silver, vice president of innovation and capabilities at Pepsi’s North American beverages unit, told CNBC the drink was the fastest to be created in company history.
- “I think we’re launching this at a time when there’s more consumer interest than there previously was, given everything that’s going on from a macro perspective,” Silver said.
What you need to know:
The drink is a calorie- and sugar-free noncarbonated water, Fast Company reports.
The drink includes 200 grams of L-theanine, which is an amino acid found in green and black tea, as well as mushrooms. The product has been suggested to help people sleep.
- “From a scientific and regulatory perspective, we feel really good about making that claim around L-theanine. Specifically, we have safety in clinical data to prove that it works,” Silver said, according to CNBC.
When is it available?
- The drink will be widely available in December.
Correction: This article originally said the drink has 200 grams of L-theanine. It’s actually 200 milligrams.
