Hurricane Sally has moved toward the Gulf Coast, potentially bringing historic flooding and life-threatening conditions to the area, CBS News reports.

The eye of the storm will pass over Southeastern Louisiana Tuesday and then make landfall Tuesday night or Wednesday morning.

And apparently the storm could bring 30 inches of rain to the coast.

  • “The increase in the amount of forecast rainfall was due to the storm’s decreased forward speed. Monday night into Tuesday Sally had crawled to a pace of just 2 mph as it inched closer to land,” AccuWeather reports.
  • The storm was expected to lead to a storm surge in Louisiana and Alabama, causing flooding in both of those states.

The peak might be over

The storm peaked Monday night as a Category 2 hurricane, according to AccuWeather. Winds hit a maximum of 100 miles per hour.

  • The hurricane became a Category 1 storm Monday.

Businesses prepare for what’s coming

Walmart closed more than 50 stores to prepare for Hurricane Sally, according to WKRG. The company said the stores will be closed until the storm passes and it is safe to reopen.
