President Donald Trump recently issued his first comments since many of his supporters stormed the U.S. Capitol last week.
Trump spoke before he boarded a flight to Texas.
- “People thought what I said was totally appropriate,” Trump said. “And if you look at what other people have said, politicians at a high level about the riots during the summer, the horrible riots in Portland and Seattle and various other places, that was a real problem.”
Trump said what he said last week was analyzed by many people.
He said the real problem was what high-level politicians said about violence.
- “That was the real problem,” he said.
When asked if Trump would resign, the president said: “I want no violence.”
- “For Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer to continue on this path, I think it’s causing tremendous danger to our county and it’s causing tremendous anger. I want no violence.”
Context:
Congress issued a single article of impeachment against President Donald Trump over the riot at the U.S. Capitol last week, according to a draft of the articles obtained by The Associated Press.
The single charge is “incitement of insurrection.”
- Trump was impeached in December 2019. (He was later acquitted by the Senate). He could be the first president in U.S. history to be impeached twice, though.
