Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell issued comments against the U.S. Capitol riots on Tuesday morning, saying the riots were “provoked” by President Donald Trump.

  • “The mob was fed lies. They were provoked by the president and other powerful people, and they tried to use fear and violence to stop a specific proceeding of the first branch of the federal government which they did not like.”

McConnell also confirmed the election results.

  • “We certified the people’s choice for their 46th president. Tomorrow, President-elect Biden and Vice President-elect Harris will be sworn in.”

After the attacks on Jan. 6, McConnell called the events of the day a “failed insurrection.”

  • “We’ve never been deterred before, and will be not deterred today,” he said. “They tried to disrupt our democracy. They failed. ...
  • “Now we’re going to finish exactly what we started.”
