Although Taco Bell doesn’t sell any sandwiches, the company isn’t counting itself out of the chicken sandwich wars.
In a recent interview with Business Insider, Taco Bell’s chief global food innovation officer, Liz Matthews, revealed that the fast food company is planning to release a new item designed to “interrupt” the recent chicken sandwich craze.
“I love watching the competitors,” Matthews said (via Mashed), “I think a lot of players out there are doing a great job, but what I will say is that we will interrupt that with what we’re going to do on chicken.”
Fox News reports that Matthews did not specify whether the new item will be a chicken sandwich or another food item more in line with the Taco Bell’s past chicken offerings, like the Naked Chicken Chalupa or Naked Chicken Chips.
While the specifics around the new item are being kept under wraps, Matthews revealed that Taco Bell will be releasing a full slate of new items over the next 24 months, including company ideas created or sidelined during the pandemic, according to Fox News.
Matthews’ announcement arrives mere weeks after several other fast food chains submitted their bids for the fast food chicken sandwich wars (which, according to Cheddar, officially began in 2019 when Popeyes introduced its new chicken sandwich).
Earlier this month, both McDonalds and KFC unveiled their plans for new-and-improved chicken sandwiches, both of which will have nationwide releases this year, according to Fox News.
While fast food lovers anxiously await the arrival of the Taco Bell’s entry into the chicken wars, they can pass the time with a cup of Cheesy Fiesta Potatoes or a spicy potato soft taco, as the Taco Bell announced the return its recently discontinued potato products last week.
