The novel coronavirus is spreading so fast in California that there is a new case every six seconds, Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti revealed in a new interview.

What happened?

Mayor Garcetti said Sunday that there is a new case every six seconds, according to The Associated Press. He said this should be a warning to other places about how fast the virus could spread.

  • “This is something now that really is spreading in the home,” Garcetti said. “What’s happening in Los Angeles can and will be coming to many communities across America. If you get two households together for Christmas, if you went to a New Year’s gathering — even if it was people you know and love so you thought it was OK — that’s when this virus exploits that weakness and is going far.”

Garcetti said a number of people have lightened their behavior because of the vaccine rollout.

“We cannot. We cannot let up,” the mayor said. “This is a virus that preys off of our weakness, preys off of our exhaustion.”

Is the new mutation there yet?

Officials in California said over the weekend that California reported cases of the COVID-19 variant, which has been deemed more transmissible than the first mutation, NBC News reports.

  • However, the new mutation has not been found to be more deadly, nor has it been shown to be resistant to the COVID-19 vaccine.
