Three states in the country have the highest infection rates of COVID-19 pandemic in the entire world, a grim record for the United States during the pandemic, NBC News reports.
The three states include:
- Arizona
- California
- Rhode Island
A look at the numbers:
- Arizona has the highest per-capita rate of infections with 785 cases per 100,000 in the last week. This is the highest rate in the world, according to NBC News.
- Rhode Island has 671 new cases per 100,000.
- California has a case rate of 658 per 100,000.
For context, the Czech Republic has a rate of 653 per 100,000 — which is the biggest of any single country. This means Arizona, Rhode Island and California all have a higher case rate than any single nation.
More on Arizona
Earlier this week, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention listed Arizona as the state with the highest rate of COVID-19 infections, as I wrote about for the Deseret News.

Arizona’s numbers might be worse since health officials haven’t received all the data from Native American communities.
- Arizona “is one of a handful of states that have been resistant to employ strict measures to control the virus,” according to The Hill. “It does not have a mask mandate and remains largely devoid of restrictions on indoor dining, bars and nightclub activities that other states implemented months ago to slow COVID-19’s spread.”
