A new piece of drone footage takes you through Iceland’s Fagradalsfjall volcano from a first-person, bird’s-eye view.

  • The footage — which you can watch below — comes from drone pilot Bjorn Steinbekk, who posted a 15-second clip on Facebook.
  • The video shows a bird’s-eye view of soaring through the sky and by the volcano.

Context

The Verge reports that the Fagradalsfjall volcano started to erupt last Friday for the first time in 800 years.

  • “Thankfully, the eruption was small and has not put anyone in danger. Instead, it’s gifted the world with some awe-inspiring views of lava flowing from the ground,” according to The Verge.

Per Vox, the eruption released about 10 million square feet of lava. Some fountains of lava skyrocketed to 300 feet high.

Anything to worry about?

It doesn’t look like this impacted the population at all.

  • “The eruption, in the Geldinga Valley, was remote enough that evacuations were not necessary, and no structures were endangered,” Vox reports.

In fact, Iceland Prime Minister Katrín Jakobsdóttir said on Twitter there’s no major concern at the moment.

  • “We are monitoring the situation closely and as of now it is not considered a threat to surrounding towns. We ask people to keep away from the immediate area and stay safe.”
