Officer Kim Potter — the former police officer who fatally shot Daunte Wright in a suburb outside of Minneapolis over the weekend — has been charged with second-degree manslaughter, The Star Tribune reports.
- Washington County Attorney Pete Orput told Star Tribune the charges would come Wednesday, just days after the shooting.
Potter — a 26-year veteran of the force — thought she was using her Taser and not her firearm, The Associated Press reported. Police Chief Tim Gannon called the fatal shooting an “accidental discharge.”
Potter announced she was resigning from her position on Tuesday following protests in the Minneapolis area.
- Gannon, the police chief, also announced he would exit the force, according to The New York Times.
Potter sent a letter to city officials Tuesday that announced her resignation, per The New York Times.
- “I have loved every minute of being a police officer and serving this community to the best of my ability, but I believe it is in the best interest of the community, the department and my fellow officers if I resign immediately,” she wrote.
Protests in Minneapolis
Law enforcement and protesters have clashed in recent days due to the fatal shooting, as the Deseret News reported.
Hundreds of people protested outside of the Brooklyn Center Police Department and stayed outside past the city’s curfew, which had been set to 7 p.m., according to Minneapolis’ KMSP Fox 9.
- “On Monday night, people chanted ‘no justice, no peace,’ as law enforcement in riot gear stood inside a fenced enclosure outside the police department,” according to the Pioneer Press.
