April 22 is Earth Day, and this year Google decided to celebrate the special event by transforming its logo into an environmentally conscious animation.

According to CNET, the 2021 Earth Day theme is “Restore Our Earth,” a phrase that’s intended to spotlight the idea of rehabilitating the world’s ecosystems by means of innovative thinking, natural processes and emerging green technologies.

The Google animation highlights this theme as it shows generations of individuals choosing to plant trees and then growing up alongside them.

The website’s description of the animation states, “The planet we call home continues to nurture life and inspire wonder. Our environment works hard to sustain us, which calls for us to return the favor. ... Today’s video Doodle shows a variety of trees being planted within natural habitats, one of the many ways we can do our part to keep our Earth healthy for future generations.”

The description continues, “This Earth Day — and everyday — we encourage everyone to find one small act they can do to restore our Earth. ... It’s bound to take root and blossom into something beautiful” (via Space.com).

Sophie Diao, the artist behind the Google animation, said she was inspired by stories of people who decided to plant trees as kids and then care for them throughout their lives, USA Today reports.

“One person can pass a sapling to someone else, and trees can sustain through many generations of human lives,” Diao said (via USA Today). “Even if each person just plants one tree, if you share it with enough people, eventually you can create an entire forest.”
