Video footage has been released showing the police killing of Andrew Brown Jr., a 42-year-old Black man from North Carolina.

  • The family of Brown got to view the footage, which was a 20-second snippet in total. No details about what appeared in the video were shared yet, per CNN.

Brown was killed by Pasquotank County sheriff’s deputies in Elizabeth City last week, according to CNN. Brown was fatally shot when he was being served an arrest warrant, according to reports.

  • “Few details have been released about the shooting, but according to dispatch audio from that day, first responders can be heard saying a man had gunshot wounds to the back. Since then, peaceful protests throughout the city have called for officials to release the police body camera video of the shooting,” CNN reports.
  • Per USA Today, the attorney for Brown’s family “said the man was shot in the back of the head while another lawyer said Brown did not appear as a threat at the time of the shooting.”

Elizabeth City, N..C., declared a state of emergency on Monday to prepare for potential civil unrest over the video footage.

  • The state of emergency will be enacted “until deemed no longer necessary to protect our citizens” the declaration of the emergency said, according to WBTV.
