California Gov. Gavin Newsom became one of the first prominent figures to receive the Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine, CBS Los Angeles reports.
- He received it at a mobile location at the Baldwin Hills Crenshaw Plaza Vaccine Satellite Center.
Newsom then held a joint news conference with Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti, where they talked about the importance of getting vaccinated.
- “The best vaccine is the next one available,” Newsom said, according to KTLA.
Newsom also praised California for its vaccination success.
- Newsom said: “We in the state of California have committed to what no other state in the country had, 40% of all our doses over the course of the last few weeks overlaid with an equity frame, an equity index that we’re utilizing, census track, neighborhood by neighborhood, ZIP code by ZIP code, making a determination that we need to do more and do better.”
Utah Gov. Spencer Cox got the COVID-19 vaccine at the end of March. It remains unclear which COVID-19 vaccine he received.
Johnson & Johnson mishap over COVID-19 vaccine

There was some controversy with the Johnson & Johnson vaccine recently as employees at a manufacturing plant that develops the COVID-19 vaccine accidentally mixed up ingredients with the AstraZeneca vaccine, as I wrote for the Deseret News.
- As a result, 15 million doses of the vaccine were thrown away.
- However, the issue will “not affect any Johnson & Johnson doses that are currently being delivered and used nationwide, including the shipments that states are counting on next week,” per The New York Times.
