California Gov. Gavin Newsom may be gearing up for another stimulus check rollout, NPR reports.
Why Newsom could send California stimulus checks
Newsom has spent the year cutting spending in order to end a deficit in the state of California, giving the state a massive surplus for the year because of the coronavirus pandemic, according to NPR.
- “It’s a remarkable, remarkable turnaround,” Newsom said on NPR’s “All Things Considered” podcast.
Newsom has faced a massive campaign to recall him from his position, as I wrote for the Deseret News. In fact, a recent campaign qualified for the California ballot, meaning voters could decide Newsom’s fate on the ballot in November.
Who qualifies for California’s stimulus check?
Newsom is looking to give out stimulus checks to residents. If the plan is approved, the state would dish out $600 checks to people who earn up to $75,000 per year. There would also be $500 bonuses “for tax filers with dependents and undocumented families,” according to NPR.
California already had a stimulus check
Back in February, Newsom announced that low-income California residents would receive a $600 stimulus check from California. The check was $600 per person and was in addition to the stimulus check given out by Congress at the end of December during the Trump administration’s era, as I explained for the Deseret News.
Residents who earned less than $30,000 per year would receive the one-time payment, according to The Associated Press.
