The Gabby Petito missing case took a dark turn Sunday as the FBI said it had found human remains in Wyoming that were consistent with the description of Gabby Petito.

“Earlier today, human remains were discovered consistent with the description of Gabrielle ‘Gabby’ Petito,” said FBI Supervisory Agent Charles Jones at a press conference Sunday, as I wrote for the Deseret News.

Petito was reported missing on Sept. 11 after a cross-country road trip with her boyfriend, Brian Laundrie. On Sept. 19, her body was found in Wyoming outside Grand Teton National Park, which was her last known location.

No cause of death had been determined Sunday, the FBI said. But a full forensic analysis would be done soon.

Teton County, Wyoming, Coroner Dr. Brent Blue told CNN that the autopsy is currently scheduled for Tuesday. Officials would likely confirm the identity of the remains using photos, personal ID or DNA, too.

Earlier on Sunday, Blue told News Nation that a body had been found outside of Grand Teton National Park. However, he said he didn’t know the identity of the body. He also said he didn’t know if the body was a man or woman, per News Nation.

Sunday was filled with more questions about the case after YouTube bloggers Jenn and Kyle Bethune released a video that showed what appeared to be Petito and Laundrie’s converted van near Grand Teton National Park about two days after Petito last talked to her family, according to Fox News.

“We came across a white van that had Florida plates,” said blogger Jenn Bethune in a video posted to YouTube. “A small white van. We were going to stop and say hi because we’re from Florida too, but the van was completely dark. There was nobody there, so we decided to continue on our way.”

The video became an instant source of conversation online as Reddit, Twitter and TikTok users pointed out different areas of the video, searching for clues with what might have happened to Petito.

Now, the search continues for Laundrie, the missing boyfriend of Petito. Laundrie, who returned home to Florida on Sept. 1, which was 10 days before Petito was reported missing, was then reported missing on Friday, Sept. 17.
