If Santa Claus was an American citizen, would he have sided with Democrats or Republicans in November?

A new YouGov survey asks about that and other quirky, Christmas-related topics, revealing, among other things, that most Americans think old St. Nick would share their political views.

“Among Democrats, 62% think he would support the Democratic Party. Among Independents, 50% think he would support Independents. Among Republicans, 55% think Santa would back the Republican Party,” YouGov reported.

The survey also showed that Democrats and Republicans share a sense that the “war on Christmas” is petering out.

While Republicans are still much more likely than Democrats to worry about attacks on the holiday, the share of members of each party who say there’s a war on Christmas in the United States has notably dropped since December 2022.

This year, 36% of Republicans say there’s a war on Christmas, compared to 59% in 2022, YouGov found.

The share of Democrats who say the same fell from 25% in 2022 to 13% today.

Americans are divided over Santa’s political views. Equal shares of U.S. adults say he’d be a Republican (21%) or Democrat (21%), while 30% say he’d be independent.

Nearly 1 in 4 Americans (24%) believe children are never too old to believe in Santa Claus.

Most families are supportive of Santa-related traditions and not worried about how kids will respond when they find out the truth. “Eighty-one percent agree that teaching children to believe in Santa creates an opportunity for family bonding and shared memories, and 80% say doing so creates a fun and magical holiday experience,” YouGov reported.

YouGov’s new survey was fielded from Dec. 3 to 5, 2024, among 1,107 U.S. adult citizens. The margin of error for the full sample is 4%.
