A car plowed into a crowd at a Christmas market in Magdeburg, Germany, late Friday, leaving at least two people dead and dozens injured.

According to The New York Times, the two deceased are an adult and a small child.

There were more than 65 people injured, 14 of them sustaining severe injuries, per reports.

Government officials have said the incident is suspected to be an attack, and authorities are working to determine the motive.

According to The New York Times, the driver was arrested and has been identified as a 50-year-old Saudi Arabian citizen.

He has been in Germany since 2006 and works as a doctor in a small town outside of Magdeburg.

According to CNN, a video posted on social media captured the moment the vehicle drove straight into a crowd at the market.

“In the video, dozens of people are crowded at the market stalls when the vehicle plows directly into them. Some people can be seen running away from the car in panic, others dive into the stalls. Bodies and debris are scattered across the narrow lane as the car turns out of the plaza,” according to CNN.

“It remains unclear how the driver was able to circumvent the barriers that were protecting the market in Magdeburg. The car drove some 1,200 feet before it stopped,” per The New York Times.

Magdeburg is located west of Berlin and is the state capital of Saxony-Anhalt. The city has a population of around 240,000, per The New York Times.

“The reports from Magdeburg are alarming, My thoughts are with the victims and their families,“ German Chancellor Olaf Scholz wrote on X. ”We are at their side and at the side of the people of Magdeburg. My thanks go to the dedicated rescue workers in these anxious hours."
