Within hours of President Donald Trump announcing that Charlie Kirk had died after being shot at an event in Utah, campus groups and communities around the country began planning vigils to honor the Turning Point USA founder.

During the vigils, crowds of varying sizes gathered with signs, flowers and candles to honor Kirk and his legacy.

A look at the vigils held in Utah on Wednesday

A vigil was held at the rotunda in Utah’s Capitol on Wednesday evening, hosted by a number of Utah state lawmakers. Hundreds of people were gathered for the vigil that featured prayers and speeches from present and former state representatives.

A number of people also gathered outside Timpanogos Regional Hospital, where Kirk was taken after the shooting, on Wednesday evening. Those gathered brought signs, tea lights and small American flags, per The Salt Lake Tribune.

There was also a vigil held at Orem City Center Park, during which a photo of Kirk was displayed on a stage as various people got up to speak about Kirk and how he impacted their lives.

Vigils held across the country

In Scottsdale, Arizona, where Kirk lived, his local Catholic community, with the group Catholics for Catholics, held a rosary vigil for the political commentator.

The Idaho Freedom Foundation also held a vigil for Kirk on the steps of the state’s Capitol on Wednesday evening.

The New York Yankees held a moment of silence in honor of Kirk ahead of their Major League Baseball game on Wednesday against the Detroit Tigers.

A crowd also gathered in the pews of St. Joseph’s, a Roman Catholic church in Washington, D.C., in remembrance of the political activist.

The gathering was organized by the office of Sen. Roger Marshall, R-Kan., on Wednesday as a prayer vigil, per The Washington Post. Over 150 people attended the vigil, many still dressed in work clothes.

According to Oklahoma newspaper OU Daily, around 100 people gathered for a candlelight vigil on Oklahoma University’s campus that was organized by the school’s Turning Point USA chapter.

Upcoming vigils in honor of Charlie Kirk

There were a number of vigils that happened on Wednesday, but there are still more being planned for the coming days. Some of these upcoming vigils for Kirk are taking place in Utah, and are others are scattered around the country.

Also on Thursday, there will be a vigil held on Southern Utah University’s campus at 7:30 p.m.

A vigil for Kirk has been planned for Thursday night at 7 p.m. at the Orem Center Park. According to Fox 13, organizers have asked people to bring candles, flowers and anything else that will honor the Kirk family.

Turning Point USA has also planned a candlelight vigil in honor of Kirk at the Utah State University campus on Friday at 8 p.m.

Texas A&M campus in College Station, Texas, is holding a vigil on Thursday at 9 p.m.
