- Jihad Al-Shamie carried out a deadly attack on a British synagogue during Yom Kippur, pledging allegiance to the Islamic State group and killing two Jewish men while injuring three others.
- Witnesses described Al-Shamie ramming his car into the synagogue, attempting to break in and stabbing people. Adrian Daulby was accidentally shot and killed by responding officers.
- Al-Shamie had a record of violent and abusive behavior, including rape allegations and manipulation of multiple women, and had shown extremist sympathies before the attack.
During his deadly attack on a British synagogue last Thursday, Jihad Al-Shamie called police forces and pledged allegiance to the Islamic State, according to Greater Manchester Police.
As Yom Kippur worship services commenced, Al-Shamie drove a black Kia vehicle at people outside the synagogue before colliding with a wall of the building. He then stepped out of the car and began stabbing people with a knife.
One eyewitness, Gareth Tonge, told the BBC he saw Al-Shamie stab at the synagogue’s windows and try to get inside. Another witness told The Guardian they heard Al-Shamie shout, “This is what you’re going to get for killing our children.”
Rabbi Daniel Walked said Al-Shamie was “body-charging the doors, throwing heavy plant pots, doing everything he could to get in,” as people inside held the doors shut.
Two Jewish men, 66-year-old Melvin Cravitz and 53-year-old Adrian Daulby, were killed in the attack. Three other men suffered serious injuries and remain in the hospital, including a Community Security Trust worker with stab wounds and a security guard with car impact injuries, The Guardian reported.
Daulby was blocking the front doors when a stray bullet, fired by police officers, hit him. He was pronounced dead by emergency services.
Al-Shamie entered the U.K. from Syria as a young child and was granted British citizenship in 2006, per The New York Times.
Al-Shamie’s 3 wives describe him as ‘aggressive’

Al-Shamie had a history of allegedly committing violence against women.
At the time of the attack, he was on bail for an alleged rape, the BBC reported.
The Telegraph reported that Al-Shamie had an “abusive affair” with a high school student who was 18 years old. The 35-year-old told her he was 24, would “stalk” her and made her watch “extreme” videos that supported the Islamic State.
One of Al-Shamie’s wives said she met him on a Muslim dating app and was unaware he had other marriages.
The killer allegedly told her about his other wife over text.
One of his wives, a 38-year-old white Muslim convert, accused him of raping her multiple times during their three-year marriage, according to the Telegraph.
