At least two people were killed and nine others injured in a shooting at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, on Saturday.

On Sunday morning, the Providence Police Department said a person of interest was detained and that a shelter in place order was lifted.

Brown University issued a statement on Saturday about the shooting.

“We are very sorry to share that we have confirmed reports of two deceased victims from the active shooting situation at the Barus & Holley engineering building,” the university shared in a social media post Saturday. “There are eight additional victims in critical, but stable condition at the hospital. There remains a shelter in place order.”

Later the number of injured people was updated to nine.

University officials had said they had a suspect in custody, but they later said the person they detained was not involved, The Associated Press reported.

“We’re still getting information about what’s going on, but we’re just telling people to lock their doors and to stay vigilant,” said Providence council member John Goncalves, whose ward includes the Brown campus, according to the AP. “As a Brown alum, someone who loves the Brown community and represents this area, I’m heartbroken. My heart goes out to all the family members and the folks who’ve been impacted.”
