Eight weeks after her mother Nancy Guthrie disappeared, “Today” co-host Savannah Guthrie has opened up about the “agony” her family has gone through during this ordeal.
Savannah Guthrie did a prerecorded interview with Hoda Kotb that will air later this week. This is her first interview since her mother disappeared.
The interview was previewed Wednesday on “Today.”
“Someone needs to do the right thing. We are in agony. We are in agony. It is unbearable,” Savannah Guthrie said.
Eighty-four-year-old Nancy Guthrie was reported missing on Feb. 1 from her home near Tucson, Arizona. She was last seen the night before, when she was dropped off after dinner at her daughter Annie Guthrie’s home.
There haven’t been many answers in the case, but authorities say it is a possible kidnapping or abduction.
“And to think of what she went through. I wake up every night in the middle of the night, every night,” Savannah Guthrie said in the interview’s preview. “And in the darkness, I imagine her terror. And it is unthinkable, but those thoughts demand to be thought. And I will not hide my face. But she needs to come home now.”
Guthrie has been on leave from the “Today” show since her mother disappeared, though earlier this month, she said she plans to return to her position.
“While she plans to return to the show on air, she remains focused right now supporting her family and working to help bring Nancy home,” a spokesperson for the show said in a statement, per NBC News.
How and when you can watch Savannah Guthrie’s interview
Savannah Guthrie’s interview with Kotb will be aired during the “Today” show’s morning broadcast on Thursday and Friday.
During Wednesday’s broadcast of “Today,” Kotb talked with co-hosts Craig Melvin, Al Roker and Carson Daly about her interview with Savannah Guthrie.
“As you can imagine, it was a really emotional conversation,” Kotb said.
Daly also asked Kotb how she was doing following the interview.
“I’m OK. There is a desperation and also a steeliness about Savannah,” Kotb responded, per People.
“She’s hoping that somebody, whoever this person is, will see something and say something, and as you’ll see in the coming days, she talks about so many things,” Kotb added. “She talks about the investigation, she talks about her faith and she talks about how she’s getting through that was one portion there.”
Updates on the Nancy Guthrie investigation
Both state and federal agencies are continuing to search for Nancy Guthrie. Authorities have released a video of a person who is described as a suspect. The video shows a masked, armed figure who appears to be tampering with a security camera on Nancy Guthrie’s home, per NBC News.
The FBI is looking for a male between 5 feet, 9 inches and 5 feet, 10 inches tall, with an average build. The doorbell camera images show him wearing a black Ozark Trail Hiker Pack 25-liter backpack.
The Guthrie family has offered a reward of up to $1 million for information that could help in Nancy Guthrie’s case. They are also donating $500,000 to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, as previously reported by the Deseret News. The FBI has also offered a reward of $50,000 for information leading to Nancy Guthrie’s recovery or the arrest and conviction of anyone involved in her disappearance.
