BRIGHTON — The race to decide the first City Council members in Brighton, Salt Lake County’s newest incorporated town, remained close after the latest batch of election results was released Wednesday, while the gap between mayoral candidates widened.

Mayoral candidate Danial Knopp kept his lead, with 117 votes to opponent Don Despain’s 96 votes — a larger gap than the five-vote difference that separated the candidates election night.

The race for the town’s council at large, in which voters were asked to choose four candidates, was closer. Keith Zuspan held the fourth-place spot with 131 votes as of Wednesday, but Phil Lanouette was just four votes behind him.

The races won’t be officially decided until Nov. 19 when the final canvass takes place.

In Midvale’s District 3, another close City Council race — Heidi Robinson had 399 votes, while Bart Benson had 381.

Results also continued to come in Wednesday for key Salt Lake City races in which candidates have already conceded.

Mayor-elect Erin Mendenhall’s vote count was 26,692, compared to Luz Escamilla’s 19,349. Escamilla conceded the race to Mendenhall last week.

And Salt Lake City Council Chairman Charlie Luke, who conceded to opponent Dan Dugan on Monday, had 4,469 votes as of Wednesday, while Dugan had 4,644.
