David Romrell’s father Reid Romrell, left, and wife Elizabeth Romrell cut the ribbon during the dedication ceremony for the David P. Romrell Public Safety Building in South Salt Lake on Sunday. David Romrell, who was killed one year ago, is the first South Salt Lake police officer to die in the line of duty in the department’s 79 years. The dedication included remarks by Romrell’s family and the audience joining together to do pushups in his memory. Romrell had been with the department for 11 months after serving several tours of duty as a U.S. Marine when he was killed while investigating a burglary in progress. Felix Anthony Calata intentionally hit Romrell with his car as he attempted to get away, according to police. Calata was then shot and killed by officers.
