The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints announced in early 2019 that Temple Square and the Salt Lake Temple will undergo renovations with an expected end date of 2024.

So what does that mean for Christmas?

Temple Square still plans on having multiple events for the Christmas season, including events around Christmas and New Year’s Eve.

Christmas lights: The Christmas lights will turn on Nov. 29, 2019.

Performances: “The Holy Child” in the Tabernacle will have its season opener on Saturday, Nov. 30, 2019, and will feature a live nativity and One Voice Children’s Choir.

More: According to a press release, “scores of choral and musical groups will present free music, carols and songs of the season” from Nov. 30 to Dec. 23 at Temple Square.

  • High school and college choruses will participate.
  • Groups from inside and outside of Utah will perform, too.

New Year’s: There will also be a New Year’s celebration on Temple Square on Dec. 31. It will last from 5 p.m. to midnight.

Next year: Don’t worry about the Christmas lights closing down. As the Deseret News reported, visitors can check out the lights on the West Side of the Temple Square complex. The display might be smaller than in previous years but it will still be lit up for the holiday season.
