WEST VALLEY CITY — A man was shot and killed by a West Valley City police officer at West Valley City Hall on Friday night, the department said.

The man, whose name has not yet been released, was under investigation for driving under the influence, according to department spokeswoman Roxeanne Vainuku. She said the shooting stemmed from an “altercation” in the department’s DUI processing center in the basement of City Hall, 3600 Constitution Blvd., after the man had been arrested and taken into custody.

Police initially reported the incident occurred within the police station. They confirmed the incident about 10:50 p.m.

Vainuku said she could not give further details about what led to the altercation or whether the man was armed. She said she did not know whether the man had been searched before entering the processing area, which she described as a “very, very small” room.

The officer was not injured.

There were multiple other police officers present at the time of the shooting, Vainuku said. Body camera footage documenting the incident exists, she said, though she did not say when that footage might be made public.

The shooting is under investigation by the Salt Lake City Police Department. The officer, who Vainuku described as a veteran officer with the department, will be placed on standard administrative leave during the investigation.
