SALT LAKE CITY — Confirmed cases of people in Utah with the vaping-related illness have surpassed 40, health officials said Monday.
Forty-two cases of the severe lung illness that causes shortness of breath, fatigue, chest pain and coughs have arisen within the past several weeks, according to an update from the Utah Department of Health. Fourteen other cases await confirmation.
In 60% of the cases, the patients reported vaping nicotine. In 90% of the cases, they reported vaping THC, health officials said.
The cause remains under investigation by health departments and hospitals across the country.
As of last report, 380 cases have been confirmed nationwide, with six deaths, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
“We recommend all Utahns immediately stop using vaping products,” Utah health officials said.
