SOUTH SALT LAKE — A 3-month-old girl who was the subject of an Amber Alert issued by South Salt Lake police was found safe early Thursday in Wyoming.

The Wyoming Highway Patrol located Khaliyah Alvarez-Caro in Lander, Wyoming, about 1:45 a.m., according to South Salt Lake police detective Gary Keller. Her mother, Jasmine Alvarez, 21, was taken into custody at the time.

The girl’s father, Gabriel Brandon Caro, 19, was located in downtown Salt Lake City and arrested, Keller said.

The Amber Alert was issued Wednesday after police were called to the South Parc Townhomes, 452 E. 2250 South, where the toddler’s grandparents live, about 8 p.m. The grandparents have legal custody of the girl.

“(Gabriel Caro) does not live at the home and is not welcome at the home and was not allowed to be there,” officers noted in a police affidavit.

Caro entered the apartment through a basement window, took his daughter, pushed past the grandfather and opened the door to allow Alvarez in, before both exited to get into a waiting car, Keller said. Two other adults were inside the vehicle, he said.

An Amber Alert was issued shortly after, telling the public to be on the lookout for a gray Toyota or Chevy Malibu.

Just after 9:35 p.m., troopers from the Wyoming Highway Patrol “were notified the suspect vehicle involved in the incident was possibly headed towards Riverton, Wyoming. A short time later troopers were able to locate the vehicle in Lander, Wyoming and conduct a traffic stop,” according to a tweet from the Wyoming department.

In addition to Alvarez and her daughter being located, troopers also arrested Naomi S. Yellowbear for investigation of custodial interference.

Keller said the girl’s biological parents are homeless and have a long history of drug abuse and domestic violence.

Caro was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail about 12:30 a.m. Thursday for investigation of kidnapping, burglary and violating a protective order.

Caro was also arrested on Sept. 18 for allegedly assaulting Alvarez, whom another police affidavit stated is pregnant.

According to court records, the grandparents were awarded legal guardianship of their granddaughter in July.

Keller said the woman faces potential federal charges for taking the young girl out of state.
