SALT LAKE CITY — A woman accused of causing a fatal crash in Taylorsville while driving drunk had a blood alcohol content more than twice the legal limit, according to charging documents.

Andrea Lane Miller, 39, of West Valley City, was charged Wednesday in 3rd District Court with automobile homicide and DUI, both third-degree felonies; carrying a dangerous weapon while under the influence, a class B misdemeanor; and running a red light, an infraction.

Just after 11 p.m. on Dec. 30, Miller was driving west in a Kia Optima on 4700 South when she ran a red light and smashed into a Suzuki Aerio going south on 2700 West, according to charging documents.

The impact from the collision pushed the Aerio about 200 feet into the northbound lane, according to Unified police.

Ryan Muhlestein, 25, of Riverton, was killed. His passenger, Carlos Manuel Medina, had to be extricated from the vehicle and was taken to a local hospital in critical condition where he underwent surgery, the charges state.

After the crash, Miller was heard by witnesses stating “I need to leave” and “I can’t do this,” according to a police booking affidavit. Miller then tried to leave the scene, but was spotted by an agent with Adult Probation and Parole who happened to be in the area and stopped her.

Toxicology tests were performed and Miller’s blood alcohol content registered at 0.12%, according to charging documents. Police also found she was carrying a handgun at the time of her arrest.

A GoFundMe campaign was started by the victims’ friends to help pay for funeral and medical expenses.
