OGDEN — Charges were filed Tuesday in Ogden in a bizarre case of animal abuse.
Bruce Anthony Saunders, 33, is charged with two counts of torture of a companion animal, a third-degree felony, and criminal mischief, a class A misdemeanor.
Saunders is accused of torturing and killing a dog and a cat and then eating some of their organs, charging documents state.
Police say the odd series of events began June 6 when Saunders “cut his finger off.” The next day, police were called to Saunders’ apartment where his girlfriend found Saunders and “large amounts of blood” in their apartment and believed that he was dead, according to the charges.
In the apartment, police found a dead cat and dog in a bathtub. Both had numerous lacerations, the charges state. Saunders told the officer he had “chopped up the dog and cat and ate their hearts,” the charges state.
A warrant was issued Tuesday for the arrest of Saunders, who investigators said in charging documents at that time, “is currently a transient” and “has been reported hiding in the woods but has yet to be found by police after searching for him.”
The warrant was recalled on Wednesday after Saunders was booked into the Weber County Jail. An initial court appearance is scheduled for Thursday.
