MILBURN, Sanpete County — A tense two-day manhunt ended with the arrests of two people police say are fugitives from Wyoming.
Brett Gilman Johnson and Jamie Carol Cleghorn were taken into custody by a Utah County SWAT team around 4:45 p.m. Thursday in the small, rural Sanpete County community of Milburn, according to a statement from the Sanpete County Sheriff’s Office.
“The capture comes after two days of scouring the Milburn area, which involved following footprints and following up on possible sightings called in by residents in the area,” the statement said. “The search ended approximately 3/4 of a mile northwest of their residence.”
That residence became the focal point of the manhunt when several Sanpete County deputies and a Fairview police officer approached the home searching for two fugitives from Wyoming, police said.
“While approaching the residence, a shot was fired at officers from inside of the residence,” police said in a statement Wednesday. “An adult male and female then ran eastward from the residence into the mountainside.”
Police immediately took to social media asking residents to help them locate the man and woman, but warning them to simply call police as the fugitives were “considered armed and dangerous.”
The search also involved officers from multiple jurisdictions, including the Department of Public Safety, Utah County Sheriff’s Office and SWAT team, Snow College police, Ephraim police, Fairview police, and the Utah Department of Corrections.
“We would like to thank all of the law enforcement agencies involved in the search specifically Utah County SWAT,” the statement said Thursday. “We would also like to thank the public for their diligence in being alert and providing leads, which were crucial in locating the fugitives.”
