SALT LAKE CITY — The death of a man in police custody is under investigation.

Few details were released Friday about the death of Jesus Cruz-Jimenez, 43.

The Salt Lake County Jail released a statement saying that Cruz was arrested by Salt Lake police on Monday and brought to the jail “in restraints.”

“Upon removal of the restraints, he became unresponsive. Life saving measures were performed, and he was transported to the hospital where he passed away,” according to the statement.

A jail booking log states Cruz was arrested for investigation of aggravated assault, disarming a police officer, interfering with an arresting officer and criminal mischief.

The jail said the officer-involved critical incident protocol team was initiated and “Protocol Team Three is investigating the incident.” West Valley police confirmed Friday they are heading that investigation, but did not release any other details.

Salt Lake police declined comment Friday, citing the ongoing investigation.

A cause of death for Cruz was not released Friday.
