MANTUA, Box Elder County — A man was rescued after falling through the ice into Mantua Reservoir Monday morning.

The incident happened about 8:15 a.m. when a man in his 60s fell through the ice.

A Utah Highway Patrol trooper and Mantua Police Chief Michael Castro were among the first on scene. Castro said he didn’t hesitate to go into the water to save the man.

“It just happened really fast. We didn’t really think about it. All I was thinking about was having to help this victim get out of the water. It just wasn’t an option to see him drown right in front of us,” he said.

The man, whose name was not immediately released, was taken to a local hospital where he was expected to make a full recovery, police said.

The chief went home to change clothes and get warm before returning to duty Monday afternoon.
