VERNAL — A 3-year-old boy is dead and his mother seriously injured after a shooting in a remote part of Uintah County Monday afternoon.
At about 2:25 p.m., deputies with the Uintah County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched after reports of a shooting near Fantasy Canyon, roughly 30 miles south of Vernal.
“Deputies located the woman just west of state Road 45 on the Glen Bench Road, where they also found the boy deceased,” according to a statement from the sheriff’s office.
The woman, 40, received medical treatment from deputies on the scene before she was taken to a hospital “due to the seriousness of her injuries,” police say. Her identity was not released Monday.
“Investigators continue to process multiple scenes as they work to determine the circumstances surrounding the shooting,” the sheriff’s office said, noting that they do “not believe there are any suspects at large, and there is no threat to the public.”
Additional details were not released Monday evening.
