SPRINGVILLE — An elderly man was hospitalized in critical condition after he and other family members escaped a quickly-growing house fire late Saturday night, firefighters said.
About 11:30 p.m., crews were called to the home in the area of 115 S. 200 East. When they got there, the home was already engulfed in flames, and crews from surrounding cities responded to help.
“Six people, including a mother, father, two children and two other men were all in the home when the fire started. The father was able to get his family out just before the structure became mostly involved in fire,” officials with the Springville Department of Public Safety said in a statement.
A man described as “elderly” by fire officials was carried to an ambulance by emergency crews and taken to a hospital in critical condition. Officials did not know the extent of his injuries.
Firefighters remained at the house for most of the night. At 4 a.m., they were “finally able to gain control,” officials said.
The State Fire Marshal’s Office was on scene Sunday investigating. Early reports indicated the fire started in the basement.
