SALT LAKE CITY — Police believe a driver was impaired when he allegedly caused a multicar accident on West Temple in downtown Salt Lake City Thursday afternoon.
Zachary Sullivan Richardson, 28, was arrested for investigation of DUI, failing to remain at the scene of an accident and reckless driving.
Thursday afternoon, Richardson was driving between 60 to 70 mph on West Temple in a pickup truck when he ran a red light at 200 South and hit two cars with such force that both of them rolled, according to a police affidavit.
“(Richardson’s) vehicle then collided with three parked vehicles on West Temple causing major damage to all vehicles involved,” the affidavit states.
No serious injuries were reported.
After crashing, Richardson got out of his truck and ran, according to police. He only made it to 100 S. West Temple before being taken into custody.
“(Richardson) was unsteady on his feet, falling asleep and had pinpoint eyes,” police wrote in their affidavit.
Richardson “then became unresponsive”and was taken to a local hospital before being booked into the Salt Lake County Jail. Results of a blood test were pending as of Friday.
According to court records, Richardson took a plea in abeyance to a charge of drug possession in 2017, meaning he pleaded guilty but the charge was later dismissed after successfully completing the terms of his probation.
