SALT LAKE CITY — Weber State University has scheduled its spring commencement for Aug. 29.

Spring 2020 graduation rites originally scheduled for April 24 were postponed to comply with public health guidelines on social distancing issued by authorities due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The university estimates the class of 2019-20 to total more than 5,727 graduates. More than 3,000 have applied for spring semester graduation. The university holds two graduation events each year, one in fall and another in spring. This will be the university’s 155th commencement.

“We’re excited to confirm plans, conditions permitting, for commencement exercises to celebrate the class of 2020,” WSU President Brad Mortensen said in a statement.

“We appreciate the patience and support of the campus community — particularly graduates — as we navigate this time together to keep each other safe and promote the educational pursuits of our students,” he said.

Diplomas will arrive in the mail once final grades have been submitted and degrees processed.

Weather permitting, the university plans on Friday evening to light the “W” on the hillside east of Stewart Stadium to celebrate the class of 2020. Friday was the day commencement rites were originally scheduled.
