SALT LAKE CITY — A blaze that ignited a large abandoned building in Salt Lake City late Saturday night was most likely human-caused, firefighters said.

The fire occurred in an industrial building slated for demolition at 250 S. 200 East.

The blaze required “additional resources” to contain, said Salt Lake Fire Capt. Anthony Burton, including an aerial attack as crews fought it defensively from the outside.

Although the fire remained under investigation on Sunday, Burton said it’s “highly probable” it was caused by people.

“Natural causes are pretty rare there,” he said.

“If the public sees suspicious activity in abandoned buildings, then call those in. We do thank the public for rapidly noticing that we had an incident, and that’s what helps us contain it. And these things can spread, so the public’s doing good work out there,” he added.
