SALT LAKE CITY — A woman, 19, was shot in the leg overnight Saturday while watching illegal street racing, police say.

The shooting occurred about 12:30 a.m. in the area of 3455 W. Ninigret Drive, said Salt Lake City Police Lt. Brett Olsen.

The woman heard gunfire, realized she’d been shot, and then went home before going to a hospital for treatment. The injury did not appear life-threatening, Olsen said.

It was unknown who shot her or why, he said.

Police were working with property owners to get surveillance footage from the area.

Street racing in that area is “a problem” officers are aware of, according to Olsen.

“It’s out there in the industrial area, so nobody’s there at night. ... We’ve tried tackling it in the past, and maybe they’ve watched a little too much ‘Fast & Furious’ in the day,” he said.
