PROVO — An Orem man suspected of DUI was arrested Sunday after a crash that killed his passenger in Provo Canyon, authorities said.
About 4 a.m., Victor Alencastro, 21, of Orem, and another 21-year-old man were driving down Squaw Peak Road when Alencastro “failed to negotiate a curve” and lost control of his vehicle, Utah County Sheriff’s Sgt. Spencer Cannon said in a news release.
The vehicle rolled several times off a steep embankment and landed about 200 feet down the mountain, Cannon said.
The passenger, not wearing a seat belt, was ejected and died on scene. His name was not immediately released.
Alencastro was wearing a seat belt. He was treated at a hospital for minor injuries, where police collected blood and urine samples, according to a police affidavit written in support of Alencastro’s arrest.
“At the jail and a significant time later a breath test was performed. His (blood alcohol level) at the time was .032,” according to the affidavit.
Alencastro “told deputies and officers he had been drinking beer and was driving too fast and could not make the turn,” Cannon said.
Alencastro was arrested and booked into Utah County Jail for investigation of automobile homicide and a DUI-related accident causing injury.
