SALT LAKE CITY — The Consulate of Mexico has announced an effort to expand coronavirus testing among the medically uninsured.

Free, drive-thru testing will be offered from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Friday at Victor’s Event Center at 3270 W. 2537 South in West Valley City.

The consulate is teaming up with the events center and the Utah Department of Health and the University of Utah Wellness Bus to offer the testing.

The testing is being offered to people who do not have health insurance. People who want to be tested must schedule appointments by calling 801-747-9547 or 801-413-3248 for English, or 801-436-7118 for a line that can assist Spanish speakers.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the effects of COVID-19 on the health of racial and ethnic minority groups is still emerging but current data suggest a disproportionate burden of illness and death among racial and ethnic minority groups.

Byron Russell, who leads the multicultural subcommittee of Utah’s COVID-19 Community Task Force, noted last week that 14.2% of people in Utah identify as Hispanic or Latino yet they make up 38.1% of the state’s total cases of COVID-19.

The Utah Department of Health’s latest data show 98 people have died with COVID-19 as of Monday, the latest a Cache County woman older than 85.

The woman’s death increased the death toll by one over Sunday. There are 95 positive COVID-19 cases currently hospitalized, slightly down from Sunday. Overall, there have been 692 hospitalized cases to date.
