WEST JORDAN — Police say a West Jordan man had stopped taking medication for mental health issues before allegedly stabbing another man over the weekend.

Delfin Juan Garcia, 39, was arrested for investigation of aggravated kidnapping, aggravated assault resulting in serious injury, possession of a weapon by a restricted person, obstructing justice, two counts of domestic violence in the presence of children and intoxication.

On Saturday, West Jordan police responded to a domestic violence-related stabbing near 7500 South and 3300 West.

“Delfin used a large knife and stabbed (another man) at least two times causing serious bodily injury,” according to a police affidavit.

A witness said the victim kept trying to escape from Garcia, but Garcia would not let him go, the affidavit states.

Witnesses also stated that Garcia had consumed “a large amount of alcohol” prior to the attack, according to the affidavit.

“The suspect has mental health conditions — schizophrenia — and has stopped taking his medication and has self-medicated with alcohol,” the affidavit states. “The suspect’s reason for stabbing the victim was a delusion and did not occur. This is known because a witness observed the attack, and the suspect’s statement of what occurred did not in fact occur.”

Police also noted that Garcia qualifies as being a habitual violent offender due to previous convictions of aggravated assaulted, forcible sexual abuse and other crimes for which he has served time in prison, according to the affidavit.
