HENEFER — A 69-year-old Salt Lake man died after being trapped between two rocks in a rafting accident on the Weber River.
Summit County Search and Rescue responded to a call for help Thursday afternoon when two rafts carrying two men and two children overturned in the swift-moving river, according to Summit County Sheriff’s Lt. Andrew Wright.
While three of the four people were able to get out of the river, the 69-year-old man found himself wedged between two rocks, and search and rescue crews had to be called to pull the man from the water, Wright said.
Wright said the man was flown by helicopter to a hospital where he later died. He reminded people to use caution when recreating near or in mountain rivers.
“It’s important for people to understand that we’re still in runoff season,” Wright said. “Waters are moving very quickly and they’re very, very cold. ... You need to be prepared to fight through that.”
He said people should consider waiting to raft until runoff season ends later this summer.
