MAPLETON — A 22-year-old Provo man died in an accident in Mapleton on Friday, police said.
Caleb Johnson was driving south into Mapleton on U.S. 89 about 8:55 a.m. After passing through the 1600 North intersection and approaching 400 East, another vehicle turned off 400 East in front of Johnson’s vehicle, Mapleton police said.
Johnson swerved in an effort to avoid crashing with the other car, which forced him into an oncoming lane. He collided with a northbound dump truck. Both vehicles caught fire, police said.
The vehicle that had pulled out onto U.S. 89 in front of Johnson was not impacted, police said.
“At this point there are no indications of speed or alcohol/drugs having a role in this accident. At the conclusion of the investigation the case will be screened with our prosecuting attorneys to determine if charges are appropriate,” police said.
Johnson grew up in Mapleton, according to the statement, and had just gotten married one month ago.
“As we learn more about Caleb it is obvious that he had a positive influence in this world,” police said.
“We offer our sincere condolences to Caleb’s family, friends, and all that he impacted during his life. The Johnson family are valuable members of our Mapleton community and we hope all will join in offering support and condolences to this wonderful family.”
