SALT LAKE CITY — The third of three people who were in a car that was hit by a train near Mona, Juab County, over the weekend, has died as a result of his injuries.

Jacob Michael Cottle, 22, of La Plata, Maryland, passed away early Wednesday, according to an update from his family on a GoFundMe page set in his name.

Cottle’s girlfriend, Cassandra Brielle Hatch, 22, of Gilbert, Arizona, and his former mission companion, Tanner Ryan Davies, 22, of Spanish Fork, were also killed when their vehicle was hit by a Union Pacific train on Burraston Road Saturday, according to a press release from the Juab County Sheriff’s Office.

The trio had been in Mona at a rope swing, according to the GoFundMe page.

“It is a rural area, no crossing arm, and trains infrequently pass by, many assume it’s an abandoned track. We know they are not the first in this kind of accident there,” the family stated.

Cottle had been on life support since the accident, and his family conceded “his prognosis is not good.”

On Facebook, friends and family members posted messages of condolence and tribute to Cottle.

“He will be greatly missed. I truly don’t think I’ve ever met someone more loving, caring and happy. You can ask anyone and that’s the first thing that comes to mind, just always happy. Always made me smile,” one man wrote.
