SALT LAKE CITY — The body of a 24-year-old man who drowned while swimming in Deer Creek Reservoir has been recovered.

Jose Antonio Fuentes-Alvarez was swimming friends in Rainbow Bay area at Deer Creek State Park about 2 p.m. Sunday.

“While he was swimming, members of Fuentes-Alvarez’s group witnessed him begin struggling to keep his head above the water. Three members of the group attempted to swim out to assist him but were not successful. Others on shore then called 911 for help,” according to a statement from Utah State Parks.

A camp host, a Utah Highway Patrol trooper and a park ranger were able to help the other swimmers, according to the statement.

A remote controlled vehicle was used to locate Fuentes-Alvarez’s body about 10 p.m. Sunday. The Wasatch County Search and Rescue Team then recovered the body, which was 16 feet underwater and about 80 yards from shore, park officials said.
