MAGNA — Two people on a tandem bicycle were hit by a car near Magna Thursday, killing one person and injuring the other.

About 5:45 a.m., a man and woman were cycling west on state Route 201 near 9200 West when they were hit by a car going the same direction, according to the Utah Highway Patrol.

UHP Lt. Nick Street said the bike was “veering to the right” when for an unknown reason it “crossed in front” of the oncoming car and was hit.

A man on the bike was pronounced dead at the scene. A woman was taken to a local hospital in critical condition with undisclosed injuries.

Street said it was still dark at the time the crash with little lighting in the area.
