SANDY — Sandy police are trying to piece together what happened before a female victim was fatally shot on Eastgate Drive in Sandy Wednesday night.
Witnesses told police they heard three or four gunshots around 6:40 p.m., and then saw several teenagers running from the area. Sandy police tweeted that a female victim had been wounded in a shooting in the area of 200 W. Eastgate Drive, and that she’d been transported to a hospital in critical condition.
The victim, whose identity and age weren’t released, later died from her injuries.
Around 10 p.m., police announced on Twitter that they’d arrested a juvenile male, and that they didn’t believe there were any other suspects. Investigators didn’t release many details as they worked late into the night trying to understand what led to the fatal shooting.
“We’re looking at that, what started the confrontation, how it began,” said Sandy Police Sgt. Clayton Swensen, “but we know there was a confrontation between two groups of people, and it escalated from there.”
